Top five facts about VHS Choir!
1. There are
no rehearsals after school except for
the dress rehearsal before a show.
2. Students who
are in band, sports, A.S.B., or Drama can be in Choir without a conflict.
In fact, we ENCOURAGE IT – it will make you a better performer!
3. Choir puts
on many fundraisers a year to earn money for tour. One fundraiser, the annual
school Swing Dance has Choir students singing Jazz solos backed up by a live
combo
4. Participation
in choir costs less than any other extra-curricular activity at VHS.
5. This year,
choir sang in The L.A. Walt Disney Hall, San Diego, Fullerton Jazz Fest, Cal
Poly San Luis Obispo Performing Arts Center, and Disneyland!
Ensemble Descriptions
Intermediate Mixed Choir
Mixed Choir is a non-auditioned choral ensemble which provides an “easy-learning” atmosphere for those students who wish to improve their vocal skills. Levels in this class vary from beginning to advanced. The class focuses on the instruction of basic vocal, sight-reading, and music theory skills. Repertoire from many choral styles is learned and performed. Mixed Choir is considered a fine arts elective.
Advanced Concert Choir
Concert choir is one of the most advanced ensembles consisting of auditioned vocalists at Valencia High School. It performs choral literature from all of the various musical eras. Styles performed include classical, romantic, baroque, jazz, folk, pop, rock, etc. Music from these styles will be sung in as many as five languages. Concert choir is considered a fine arts elective.
*Enrollment is full (65 students as of 6/04) but individual
auditions are available on request.
Advanced Vocal Jazz Ensemble
Vocal Jazz / Chamber is the newest and most advanced of the choral ensembles here at Valencia High School. It performs challenging a-acapella literature and jazz pieces from all of the various musical eras written for small vocal ensembles. This year it will concentrate on vocal improvisation (scatting), performing with a combo, and learning the basics that are essential to all musicians. Concentration will also be on solo singing, singing in a small group, and emphasis on part balance. Although the Vocal Jazz Chamber group is not a “core academic class”, it is considered a fine arts elective.

Men’s Ensemble

This ensemble
meets at Lunch twice a week and gives students the opportunity to perform
fun and challenging pieces of literature. Although not an actual class, attendance
is regular and some extra rehearsals are set by the group’s members.
Barbershop
Barbershop groups are independent of the choir
classes and are formed by four members of the choir. This is an extra time
commitment and extra specialists and instructors are brought in to work with

Women’s Advanced Chamber
Women’s Chamber is one of the most advanced
of the choral ensembles here at Valencia High School. It is mainly an advanced
a-acapella group. This group will sing all genres of music (Jazz, Classical,
Pop, etc.) Concentration will also be on solo singing, singing in a small
group, and emphasis on part balance. Although the Women’s Advanced Chamber
group is not a “core academic class”, it is considered a fine arts elective.
